Frank Rudolph Paul (April 18, 1884 – June 29, 1963) was an Austrian-born American illustrator widely recognized as the "Grandfather of Science Fiction Art". Trained in architectural drawing and mechanical drafting, Paul was instrumental in defining the visual language of 20th-century speculative technology, planetary architecture, retro-futuristic mega-cities, and extraterrestrial life.
Career and Impact
Gernsback Era: He served as the primary cover and interior artist for Hugo Gernsback’s pioneering science fiction publications, illustrating nearly every cover of Amazing Stories from 1926 through mid-1929.
Pulp Expansion: Beyond Amazing Stories, Paul contributed hundreds of painted covers and detailed line drawings to pulps such as Air Wonder Stories, Science Wonder Stories, Planet Stories, and Fantastic Adventures.
Historical Milestones: Paul was the official Guest of Honor at the first World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in 1939. His work famously introduced the visual debut of iconic characters, including Anthony Rogers (later Buck Rogers) on the August 1928 cover of Amazing Stories.
